Nature Parks in Luxembourg

A shot of the Moberlee Ridge and the surrounding hills.

Nature parks in Luxembourg are expansive protected areas designed to preserve the natural environment, showcase the country’s striking landscapes, and promote sustainable tourism for those who love hiking, nature, and local culture. Despite Luxembourg’s small size, there are three nature parks in country, each offering a unique atmosphere.

Two of the nature parks, Naturpark Our and Naturpark Öewersauer, are located in the north of the country while Natur- and Geopark Mullerthal is found in the west of Luxembourg. Geologically, the northern parks are in the forest covered hills of the highly folded Ardennes, while the Mullerthal highlights the fantastic cliffs of the Luxembourg Sandstone. From hidden trails to dramatic views, let’s find out what makes each of these parks stand out!

Naturpark Our

A forested hilly view common of the Nature Parks in Luxembourg

Located in the far north of the country, Naturpark Our is the largest park (419.77 km2) in the country, taking up about 16.2% of the country. The park is located in the Éislek (Ardennes) region of Luxembourg, characterized by rugged hills, dense forests, and deep river valleys.

Two main river valleys dominate the natural beauty of this park, the Our Valley and the Clerve Valley. The Our Valley is located on the border with Germany and is home to one of Luxembourg’s most famous tourist attractions, Vianden Castle. This beautiful castle dating back to Roman times is a must-visit when in Luxembourg.

Hiking in Naturpark Our is a great way to experience the rugged glamour of the Éislek. A walk on the famous Lee Trail promises good views and an easy to follow route. This trail takes you through steep valleys to many rocky outcrops which are called a “Lee” in the local language.

Otherwise, the park is full of both hiking and biking trails to explore and the roads here can be a joy to drive on, there are many winding mountain roads with long views. Overall, some of the most beautiful landscapes, most quiet forest trails, and best cultural attractions in the country can be found in Naturpark Our.

Naturpark Öewersauer

A view of Upper Sure Lake one of the great viewpoints found in the Nature Parks in Luxembourg

An oasis amongst the rugged forests and hills, Naturpark Öewersauer (162 km2), covers the areas surrounding Luxembourg’s largest lake, Upper Sure Lake. The lake provides about one-third of the country’s drinking water and also produces hydroelectricity to power the local population. However, it is more well known as a hub for recreational activities. In the warmer months, the lake is the perfect place to go for a swim, grill and picnic, or practice water sports. The lake, like other parts of the park, is covered in hiking trails full of stunning vantage points.

The park is also full of history and charm. One of the oldest towns in Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Sure, is located just downstream of the lake. This picturesque village, towered over by a medieval castle, is a must-see when traveling in the region. In the largest town in the park, Wiltz, you can find the Battle of the Ardennes and National Beer museums.

Just outside the town is one of the most haunting reminders of the region’s bloody past, Schumannseck Battlefield. The forested area was the subject of intense fighting during the Battle of the Bulge in WW2 and today is a walk-able open air museum with life-size cutouts of scenes captured on camera during the battle.

Natur- and Geopark Mullerthal

A path through blocks of mossy sandstone, a stunning sight of the Nature Parks in Luxembourg

The most popular natural area in Luxembourg, Mullerthal Natur- and Geopark (256 km2) is well-known for its epic rock formations. Here, in the west of the country, the Luxembourg Sandstone reveals itself in the most spectacular ways. Cliffs of sandstone, line the forest covered hills, actively collapsing and weathering away. Follow a hiking trail in the Mullerthal and you will find yourself walking through giant blocks of rocks.

The Mullerthal Trail system provides over 200 kilometers of well-marked paths throughout the park. If you are looking for an easy day hike with great rocks and views, I would highly recommend the popular B2 local trail in Berdorf. Otherwise, a visit and walk around the famous Schiessentümpel Waterfall is a must.

While known for its rocks, there are so many other things to see! Castles, Roman ruins, and the oldest town in Luxembourg, Echternach (established 698 AD).
